Final Evaluation

This blog entry is my final evaluation on this whole commission project. Since we started this course I think I have produced some good quality work which I think will help me get good grades for this project.

I think I have worked well throughout this project, but I could have put more effort in to doing some of the work. At the start of this project I was a bit confused as to what I could produce and make for my client. After we had the big class disscussion where we decided to make the webisodes, i felt like I knew what I was doing and excactly how I was going to achieve it. As well as making the webisodes we were asked by our client to create some big A1 posters for the 3 main buildings of the college. So we then started to plan what departments we were going to film and what footage we wanted to capture. Once we started going out around to the different departments our ideas and plans kind of didnt get used and we ended up getting some ok footage but some really bad stuff to. So to create our webisodes we used some of the good footage that we already had and then we went out again for a second time to get some better footage which we did manage to achieve. For the production of the posters we went out using a digital camera to take pictures of all the different buildings inside and outside to use on our posters. I think the production of the posters went more smoothly and turned out better because the posters seemed much eaiser to make as the webisodes, so we seemed to have put all our effort into making our posters look good.

Working for a client is something that I have never done before and I found it very wierd and different and first but then as you have the meetings and talks with them and get and understanding of what they wanted us to make for them and for when by. It was harder to work for a client because normally we create a product and our teachers marks it and gives us a grade, whereas for a client you have to make sure that they are completly happy with your finished products.

Overall though I have enjoyed this project because of all the feedom we have had to do our thing and the way that it has been st up is good. I think that I did work resonably well over this project but I do admit that I could have put more effort into my work to create something that is much better. In futre I will always make plans and stay orgainsed so that I don't get mixed and fall behind with all the work.

Feedback from audience for Posters

We placed our different posters out in our classroom and craeted some questionairres for our audince and client to answer for learning outcome 5. The questionairres included questions about the layouts, fonts and the images.

The first questionairre that I got back had answers like:

  • I think that the collage effect makes the posters and images look more interesting
  • Yes these posters do promote the college because you can see how different each building is and how the college has expanded
  • The posters help promote the college with the new buildings, makes them look much more popular than they use to look.
  • The fonts used add difference in each building, they are also very eye catching
  • I like the way the that each poster shows what is in each building and they are new and different
  • Yes I think that the posters include enough information to draw people in and the pictures are very effctive
  • The colours in each poster are co-ordinated and draws you in.
  • To improve them more perhaps include some more pictures of the surroundings and the posters should be laminated
For another questionairre we got some answers which are:

  • The layout reflects each building well
  • The posters could include clearer information on course content
  • These posters promote the college because you have showed a wide range of rooms and resources
  • The posters do show what each building looks like but there is some variation in the lighting
  • The fonts reflect the buildings well
  • I like the layouts of the posters the most
  • I think that more information could be included to your posters to make them more effective
From another questionnaire that was filled out some other answers I got:

  •  There is more space to be filled. You need to think about the way you have cut your images be artistic and creative
  • I don't think these posters promote the college very well
  • The colouring of the images could be improved maybe you could have used some graphic design
  • Some of the fonts I could not make out
  • I like the way that the lighting conditions provides a positive and welcoming feel to the college
  • There is not enough information about the different courses in each building
  • The colour stands out to more but could be made more eye catching, think about the existing posters in the Zennor reception
  • To improve be artistic and experimental with the colours

The answers that I got from another questionnaire are:

  • I think these posters show what different facilities that are on offer at the college
  • These posters need to show more of the courses on offer as well as all the buildings
  • The images show more of what the buildings look like from the outside whereas it would be better with more inside images
  • Some of the fonts used stand out well but some are hard to read
  • I like some of the angles that the posters have been taken from
  • The things that stand out most are the bright photos that are in focus and the names of each building
  • To improve show more of what's inside the college
  • Some of the photos are quite dark
  • Some photos were repetitive and blurred
Another questionnaire which i got back had answers like:

  • The layout of these posters are very appealing with good shot of each building
  • The posters show some of the college's best features; the shapes of the buildings, the interior and exterior and the different views
  • Yes these posters do definitely show what the college looks like
  • A range of fonts have been used effectively and they are all eye catching
  • The pictures overlap and different angles have been used
  • The interior and exterior have been included; however some of the shots are a bit dark
  • Just a few bits of information are missing
  • Pictures of the catering students and the drama theatre needed to be added otherwise very effective information
  • The buildings and the unique shapes that are included stand out most to me

Promotional Posters Production

Over the last few weeks Niina and I have been using the college camera's to go out and about around the college campus, so that we could get some pictures of the new buildings and the college campus. Firstly we was only going to make promotional posters for just 3 buildings in the college which were, Penberth, Zennor and Nanjizal. But we completed these fairly quick so we have decided to also create posters for the other buildings in the college, Gwenvor, Lamorna, Sennen and Porthcurno.

Zennor - For the Zennor building we have created a poster which promotes the building and shows what happens inside. The pictures that we have included in our poster were all taken by us and we think that they are the best ones, because their all different plus the weather on that day was great so it makes the pictures look so much nicer. We went out around the Zennor building on every floor we walked through taking pictures of all the different departments. We also went around the outside of the building taking pictures of the building.

Nanjizal - To create our poster for the Nanjizal building, we just went out and about in the Nanjizal building with a camera taking pictures of all the different art and design things that we could see. We also went outside again taking pictures of the outside. Once again the weather was really good on this day so it makes the pictures a whole lot better.

Penberth - For the Penberth poster which we created first, we started off by going around the outside of the building getting pictures of the long building and its surroundings and scenery. We also got some pictures of the inside of the building but these did not turn out as good as the pictures from the outsides because this building is very dark and the camera did not have a flash. We also got some images of the little Haldrine library which we have also included into our poster.

Sennen, Porthcurno and Lamorna - For these buildings we went out on the same day with a camera. We done this because it was a very sunny day so we thought we would get as many pictures of all the buildings because of the nice weather. We got some good pictures of the inside and outside of the Porthcurno and Gwenvor buildings. Then we managed to arrange to get into the Sennen and Lamorna buildings so that we could get some pictures of the insides which is good because no one has seen the insides of them because their not open yet. So when people look at our posters they can see what the buildings look like without having to go inside.

Meeting with Martin Tucker

On the 4th April 2011, we had another meeting with Martin where we showed him our work which is in the process of being completed. Firstly we told Martin exactly what we are doing for this project e.g our webisodes. He liked the sound of what we are hoping to achieve by the end of this project.

Next we showed him some of the work which we have completed which is our catering webisode which is all edited together all we need to do is add on our soundtrack which will make the webisode more interesting. We also showed him our finished poster for Penberth which he also liked a lot.

We also showed him some of the footage that we got for Motor Vehicles and explained that the students were being very immature and would not really let us film them. So myself, Niina and Harvey are going to arrange a time this week where we can go into the new Gwenvor building to film it whilst it's empty.

We had to set ourself 3 targets which we have to achieve by the end of this week:

1. Finish all posters

2. Finish all webisodes

3. Complete paperwork and update my blog

Webisodes Production

Like we had planned to last week me and Niina went to the 3 different departments today to film them for our webisodes. We firstly went to the catering department, where Jamie was happy for us to set the camera up and start filming students and herself around the kitchen. We had planned to film her doing a demonstration and then get footage of the students doing the same. But when we arrived the class had already started and they were nearly done cooking. So we started filming some of the catering students finishing off there cooking and we did get some good shots. Then Jamie set her class another task to make another dish, so we filmed the beggining of this and got about 10 minutes of footage which we are going to edit. However after watching the footage back we realised that we because we didn't use the tripod some of our footage is really wobbly and messy because we were holding the camera and walking around the kitchen. So we are going to use the footage which is good and then have another meeting with Jmaie to see if we can maybe go down there again and get some better footage.

The next department that we went to was the science department where the teacher said last week that she will have an experiment for her class to do so that we could film it. But when we got there she did have an experiment planned for her students but it was just a small experiment. We were asked to stand on one side of the room so that we were not in the way. We got some footage of her demonstrating what to do and then some other footage of her students doing it. Our footage is good, but it isn't very exciting and I don't think it will make our target audience interested in the science department and therefore doesn't respond to the brief of promoting the college.

Finally we went to the Motor vehicles department where we got footage of the garage which once again because we didn't use the tripod our footage is very messy and shaky which doesn't look very professional and wouldn't look very good. However we did get some good footage of one of the students taking the gearbox out of a car, and we also got some good footage of all the cars and machines that they use. I think that we need to go and get some more footage from all the departments again, but this time we need to use a tripod and ask them to make sure that they have something interesting and good planned for their classes so that our webisodes will appeal to our target audience.

7/4/11 - Today we are going to be going back to motor vehicles so that we can get some more footage but this time we have arranged it so that the building will be empty, because last time we went down there the students were being very immature and just running away from the camera. So we decided that we are going to use some of the good footage that we have got and then use some of the footage that we get this afternoon of the new Gwenvor building, then we will edit it down to 45 seconds using final cut, adding fades and transitions.

Final Proposal for Martin

Working Title: 45 second Webisodes and A1 Posters

Date of Production: 10/03/11

Detailed Description: I am in a group with Niina and Naomi. For this part of our commission project we are going to create a range of 45 second webisodes which can be viewed via YouTube or the college website. We are creating these webisodes because they are unique and different which we think will appeal to our target audience.

We are going to be creating our webisodes for the catering, science and motor vehicles departments and film some students and teachers either cooking something or doing some sort of science experiment. We will film the whole process and then using final cut we will edit all our footage down to 45 seconds so that it is short and sweet and it will keep our target audience entertained. As well as creating the webisodes for the different departments we will create another two for two of the new buildings, Nanjizal and Penberth. For these webisodes we are going to film around the outsides of the buildings and then the insides as well, which will show our target audience what the new buildings look like. We think that this idea to create webisodes will give our target audience a good understanding of what go ons here at Penwith and what the new departments involve and what the new campus looks like.

As well as creating the webisodes we are also going to create big A1 posters for each of the buildings on the college campus, which will be displayed on the wall as you enter each building. The posters are going to include some work from students who study in that specific building, for example we could get an art student from Nanjizal and ask them to create some cool and unique things which can be put onto the posters. We will also add photographs, which we have taken of the buildings once again from the outside and insides. We think that this is also a good idea because it will promote each of the new buildings and the departments which are in the buildings, it will also make the entrances to the buildings look much better and give it a better effect.

Target Audience: 14-25 year olds
                        The iPod/YouTube generation
